How To Recover From Sun Exposure

A 5-step plan to restoring sun-damaged skin.

Guilty of getting a little too much sun this weekend? Don’t fret. First, immediately pack SPF in your beach bag so absolutely won't forget to apply it next weekend. Second, seek immediate relief. Since overexposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can lead to pre-mature aging of the skin as well as skin cancer
after repetitive exposure, you need to be extra careful and properly protecting against (and treating) sun-stressed skin. Even if you're careful about applying sunscreen, UV rays penetrate deep into the skin layers and can cause damage without leaving a painful sunburn as a reminder.
To soothe and restore, follow these 5 expert-approved rules of treating irritated skin:

1. Take Immediate Action

“Apply a cooling, soothing, after-sun product with anti-inflammatory botanical ingredients like aloe, yucca, cucumber, and green tea. This will take down the redness and help to prevent peeling,” Director of Global Education at Dermalogica, Annet King says. “Cold baths, compresses with washcloths will help bring down the heat and pain, use for 15-20 minutes. And drink plenty of water!”

2. Moisturize, Hydrate, Moisturize, Hydrate, And Repeat

Post-sun exposure, keeping damaged skin extra-moisturized is essential. To keep skin hydrated and cool, Elena Rubin, facialist and founder of Elena Rubin Skin Care and co-founder of Ethos Collective Wellness recommends a two-fold approach: eat lots of watermelon and drink water with cucumber slices to cool and hydrate from the inside; apply mashed, chilled cucumbers, apples or raw potato slices to the skin to extract heat and hydrate skin tissues from the outside.

3. Leave It To Mother Nature

The best (and cheapest!) natural remedy can be found in your kitchen. It’s both cooling and acts as an anti-inflammatory. “Apply pure aloe vera gel. It’s both cooing, easily absorbed and calming on angry skin,” former UK beauty journalist and owner of Shen Beauty in NY Jules Stringer says. “Simply cut a lead and let the juice ooze out. Apply directly to skin.” Another natural solution to reduce the burn and itch: an oatmeal and milk mask. Mix together, apply to skin and leave on for 10 minutes.

4. Avoid PES

“Let your skin run its own course to shed the dead layers and heal the wound,” Rubin says. So no picking, exfoliating, or scrubbing (PES). And definitely stay away from anything with a gritty texture (ouch!) and products with exfoliating acids AHA’s and BHA’s. “Keep your body temperature down as well. Avoid intense exercise and saunas.” And in case there was any doubt, avoid waxing (as well as shaving if possible).

5. Be Ingredient Smart

Products that are vitamin C based are ideal for reviving sun-damaged skin. “It helps reduce the signs of ageing after sun damage and is key to repairing the skin,” says Stringer.
